Exenatide

How it works

Exendin-4 from Gila monster venom mimics GLP-1, the gut hormone that tells the pancreas to release insulin. For type 2 diabetes.

What it's made of

39 amino acids: a synthetic copy of exendin-4, found in 1992 in Gila monster venom. It looks like human GLP-1, but the enzyme DPP-4 does not cut it, and it lasts hours, not minutes.

What it's for

Prescribed for
Type 2 diabetes in adults, with diet and exercise. It does not work for type 1.

Educational satire, not medical advice.
